Children’s YouTube star Rachel Griffin Accurso, better known as Ms. Rachel, says the intense backlash over her advocacy for Palestinians in Gaza no longer fazes her. Accurso told Rolling Stone that she initially struggled with the criticism, at one point wondering why people seemed to hate her for saying she did not want children killed or starved. Now she says the possibility of losing partnerships or viewers will not stop her advocacy. Her rhetoric has also intensified: she recently accused celebrities and political leaders who remain publicly silent about Gaza of a racial double standard, arguing that they would probably speak out if the children involved were White. She has repeatedly characterized Israel’s conduct in Gaza as “genocide” and has criticized public figures she believes have failed to speak forcefully enough for Palestinians.
The controversy is especially significant because Accurso is not simply another political commentator or celebrity activist. Her educational programming reaches millions of young children, and her YouTube channel had more than 18 million subscribers earlier this year. She has insisted that she is not anti-Israel and has said she cares about Palestinian and Israeli children alike, but her Gaza activism has drawn criticism from Jewish and pro-Israel voices who argue that her framing can omit important context and amplify disputed or inflammatory claims. Rabbi Yaakov Menken of the Coalition for Jewish Values accused her of disproportionately focusing on Gaza while failing to give comparable attention to Israeli victims, while podcaster Avi Lichtschein has argued that someone with such a large audience bears responsibility for understanding the consequences of the claims she promotes. The debate illustrates something larger than one entertainer: the Israel-Gaza information war is now being fought through influencers, celebrities, entertainment brands, and cultural figures capable of shaping perceptions among audiences far larger than those reached by traditional political institutions.
