Elon Musk and Sam Altman appeared together in federal court as a major legal battle over the future of OpenAI moved into public view. Musk testified that he helped launch OpenAI as a nonprofit organization to counter unchecked artificial intelligence development and to place safety ahead of profit. The case could lead to financial damages and governance changes that may complicate OpenAI’s plans for a public offering. What began as a partnership over AI’s future has now become a courtroom struggle over power, control, and the original mission of the company.
Musk told the court he has long feared the possibility of computers surpassing human intelligence without proper safeguards. He said efforts to get governments to regulate advanced AI did not move fast enough, prompting him to take action with Altman in 2015. According to testimony, OpenAI was intended to be the opposite of closed corporate systems—an open, nonprofit lab focused on benefiting humanity. Musk warned that AI could cure diseases and create prosperity, but also could lead to catastrophic outcomes, describing a “Terminator” scenario where the technology turns deadly.
