An Illinois Islamic scholar is drawing attention after urging Muslims to increase their presence throughout some of America's most powerful institutions—from local police and fire departments to federal agencies, the Pentagon, Senate, and even the White House. During a July 31 sermon at the Prayer Center of Orland Park, Sheikh Kifah Mustapha argued that Muslims should become active participants throughout American society rather than remaining on the sidelines. He called for Muslims to serve as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, government employees, military personnel, senators, and eventually inside the White House, telling his audience that greater participation would allow Muslims to influence society and "change the world." The sermon was translated and circulated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, while RAIR Foundation characterized his message more sharply as a call for Muslims to "infiltrate" American institutions.
