The city of Annapolis, Maryland, is drawing attention after releasing an emergency preparedness guide specifically targeted toward LGBTQ+ residents. Published by the city's Office of Emergency Management during Pride Month, the guide argues that members of the LGBTQ+ community face unique challenges during natural disasters and are statistically more likely to experience displacement, food insecurity, unsanitary conditions, and social isolation following emergencies. Alongside standard recommendations such as establishing support networks and preparing emergency supplies, the guide encourages individuals to identify "safe spaces" and secure additional medical provisions related to gender-transition treatments.
The preparedness checklist includes not only traditional emergency items but also supplies associated with gender identity and transgender expression. Recommended items include hormonal medications, syringes, chest binders, wigs, packers, and what the guide describes as "gender-affirming clothing." The document also advises individuals who wear chest binders to take precautions during periods of extreme heat. City officials say the goal is to ensure that all residents are adequately prepared for emergencies and that disaster planning reflects the diverse needs of the community.
