Neuroscientist Claims That AI Can Think

Mar 18, 2025

In his book These Strange New Minds: How AI Learned to Talk and What It Means, neuroscientist Christopher Summerfield argues that AI chatbots are more than just "stochastic parrots." They demonstrate a form of intelligence that is evolving beyond human expectations. He traces the history of artificial intelligence research from Alan Turing’s early theories to today’s powerful large language models (LLMs), explaining how the shift from logical, rule-based AI to data-driven learning revolutionized machine capabilities. Unlike early models that relied on pre-programmed logic, modern AI absorbs massive amounts of information, allowing it to predict patterns, respond coherently, and even generate creative outputs.

However, Summerfield acknowledges the limitations of AI, emphasizing that it lacks consciousness, emotions, and true understanding. While skeptics argue that AI simply mimics human intelligence without true comprehension, he counters that human cognition also relies on pattern recognition and probabilistic inferences, making AI and the human brain more alike than some critics admit. He believes that as AI continues to develop—integrating audio, video, and specialized reasoning—it will exhibit even more emergent capabilities that challenge traditional definitions of intelligence. But concerns remain: AI’s ability to generate convincing falsehoods (so-called "hallucinations") could lead to misinformation, manipulation, and unintended consequences as it becomes more widely adopted.

The desire to create machines that rival human cognition echoes the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:4-9), where humanity sought to elevate itself to divine status. Revelation 13:15 also warns of a future system where artificial intelligence or digital entities could be used to control speech and beliefs, possibly paving the way for deception on an unprecedented scale. As AI’s role expands in human society, believers should remain discerning, testing all things against the truth of Scripture (1 John 4:1). READ MORE
