A groundbreaking new study has revealed that the ancient site known as Gilgal Refaim—often called the “Wheel of Giants”—is not a singular mystery after all. Using high-resolution satellite imagery collected over two decades, researchers identified 28 additional circular stone structures within a 25-kilometer radius in the Golan Heights. These massive formations, built from thousands of tons of basalt rock and dating back thousands of years, share striking similarities with Gilgal Refaim, suggesting the presence of a much larger and previously unknown ancient civilization in the region.
For years, Gilgal Refaim puzzled archaeologists due to its scale and unclear purpose. While earlier theories suggested astronomical or ceremonial uses, newer research points toward the possibility of these sites serving as gathering places for ancient communities. However, the biblical name itself—“Gilgal Refaim” (Wheel of the Rephaim)—introduces a compelling dimension. Scripture describes the Rephaim as a race of giants who once inhabited the land, including King Og of Bashan (Deuteronomy 3:11). The discovery of multiple massive stone structures in this exact region raises intriguing questions about whether these archaeological findings may align with the biblical record of a powerful and ancient people group.
