New York Legalizes Assisted Death

Dec 19, 2025

New York is set to legalize medically assisted death after Governor Kathy Hochul announced she will sign the Medical Aid in Dying Act. The law allows terminally ill adults with a prognosis of six months or less to end their lives with physician-prescribed medication. Hochul framed the decision as an issue of dignity, compassion, and autonomy, pointing to personal loss and consultations with families and medical professionals. The bill includes amendments such as a mandatory five-day waiting period and a mental health evaluation, while allowing healthcare providers to opt out without penalty.

The decision reflects a broader cultural shift toward redefining life, suffering, and human authority. What is presented as mercy raises profound moral questions about who determines the value and timing of life. Scripture consistently affirms that life is sacred and entrusted to God, not the state or the individual. As more governments normalize assisted death, the move signals a growing comfort with crossing once-clear moral boundaries—another indicator of a society drifting from biblical truth and embracing autonomy over accountability.
