Nigerian Christians say their communities are facing an orchestrated campaign of terror at the hands of Islamist Fulani militants, who are often downplayed as small criminal groups but in reality operate a vast network aimed at persecution. Survivors of kidnappings and massacres report that these attackers have developed a highly organized system of violence designed to drive Christians out of northern Nigeria. Criminologist Emeka Umeagbalasi, director of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, described the campaign as nothing less than a genocide, warning that it is part of a broader strategy to “Islamize the country.” He added that Christian faith cannot be openly professed in many regions without risking execution under accusations of “blasphemy.”

Umeagbalasi further charged that the Nigerian state itself is complicit in this systematic extermination, noting that leaders tied to Fulani Muslim tribes have done little to stop the bloodshed. He accused the government of enabling what he called “an expansive policy to Islamize the country,” while lamenting that the international community has largely remained silent about the atrocities. With former President Muhammadu Buhari and his successor Bola Tinubu both tied to Muslim leadership, the outlook for Nigeria’s Christians remains dire. If the trend continues unchecked, Umeagbalasi warned, Nigeria could lose its religious pluralism within a generation, leaving millions of Christians vulnerable to eradication.
