NJ Bill Targets Homeschool Freedom

Jul 23, 2025

A radical new bill in New Jersey—Assembly Bill 5825—aims to bring homeschooling under state control by requiring families to align their curriculum with the state’s controversial New Jersey Student Learning Standards. This means homeschool parents would be forced to teach their children the same ideologically charged content found in public schools, including early sexualization, gender identity confusion, distorted history, and relentless climate change narratives. The proposed legislation would also require families to submit personal information, curriculum plans, student portfolios, and subject their children to government-approved evaluations—an overreach that threatens parental rights and educational freedom.

Critics across the state are sounding the alarm. Education experts, legal advocates, and parental rights groups argue this bill is not about improving education—it’s about silencing dissent and forcing conformity to a failed system. With public schools in New Jersey struggling academically and plagued by moral and ideological agendas, many believe this push to regulate homeschooling is driven by fear: fear that parents can do better. The homeschooling community is mobilizing quickly, viewing this bill as an unacceptable attack on liberty and a clear effort to destroy alternative education paths. As one advocate put it—this is a hill to die on.
