A controversial new mandate in New Jersey requires hospitals to ask parents to declare their newborns’ gender identity and sexual orientation. As part of the state’s demographic data collection law, hospitals like Inspira Health have begun distributing a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Questionnaire to parents of newborns. The form includes options such as "Male," "Female," "Transgender," "Gender Queer," or "Other" for gender identity and asks parents to categorize their baby’s sexual orientation as "Lesbian or gay," "Straight," "Self-described," or "Questioning/Unsure."
