A hotel in Bavaria, Germany, has sparked international outrage after reportedly sending a message to an Israeli traveler stating, “Sorry, there are no Jews allowed in our hotel.” The message was sent through the Booking.com platform and quickly drew condemnation from Israeli diplomats and Jewish organizations. Following complaints from the traveler and intervention by Israeli officials, the hotel was removed from Booking.com while German authorities began reviewing the incident. Although the hotel later apologized and claimed the message stemmed from frustration over fraudulent booking attempts, the response has done little to quiet concerns about rising antisemitism in Europe.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of a dramatic increase in antisemitic incidents across Germany since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. According to Germany’s antisemitism monitoring organizations, thousands of anti-Jewish incidents have been documented in recent years, with many occurring on university campuses, in public demonstrations, and online. What makes this case particularly alarming is not merely the offensive statement itself, but the fact that it was expressed openly and directly to a prospective guest. For many observers, the language immediately evoked memories of a darker chapter in German history that most believed had been permanently relegated to the past.
