NOAA has dramatically raised the stakes for the developing El Niño, warning that the climate pattern could reach historic strength before the end of 2026. In its September 10 update, the Climate Prediction Center said El Niño is continuing to intensify and now has a greater than 90% chance of becoming a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2026–27. Even more remarkable, forecasters calculate a 75% chance that the October–December period will reach a three-month Relative Oceanic Niño Index of at least +2.5°C—a threshold that would exceed previous El Niño events in NOAA’s record dating back to 1950. Sea-surface temperature anomalies in portions of the eastern equatorial Pacific have already surpassed +3°C, while unusually warm water also extends deep beneath the surface, confirming that a major ocean-atmosphere shift is underway.
A historic-strength El Niño does not mean every location will experience historic weather, and NOAA specifically cautions against making that assumption. El Niño changes atmospheric circulation across the planet, increasing the probability of certain temperature and precipitation patterns while never guaranteeing exactly where extreme events will occur. In the United States, strong El Niño winters have traditionally favored wetter conditions across portions of the southern tier while parts of the northern United States can experience warmer or drier conditions. Effects can also extend around the globe through changing rainfall patterns, drought risk, flooding, agriculture, fisheries, and tropical weather. The important distinction is between strength and impact: NOAA can measure how powerful the Pacific warming becomes, but exactly how that energy translates into weather thousands of miles away will depend on numerous interacting atmospheric conditions.
