North Korea has officially commissioned its new 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, marking another significant step in Kim Jong Un’s effort to expand the nation’s military capabilities. During a ceremony at the western port city of Nampo, Kim declared that the vessel represents the successful advancement of North Korea’s plan to equip its navy with nuclear weapons. State media reported that the warship will defend the country’s western coastline and is capable of carrying anti-aircraft weapons, anti-ship missiles, and nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles. The development signals that Pyongyang is no longer content with merely defending its borders but seeks to project military power far beyond its shores.
Military analysts believe the destroyer may have benefited from growing cooperation between North Korea and Russia, highlighting the increasingly complex alliances taking shape among America’s adversaries. The vessel has already undergone several weapons tests, including launches of nuclear-capable cruise missiles, as North Korea continues to strengthen both its conventional and strategic forces. Kim openly stated that his navy is evolving from a defensive force into one equipped with "strategic means," language that reflects an ambition to field a nuclear navy capable of influencing regional conflicts and challenging Western powers in the Pacific.
