NYC Antisemitism Surges Under New Mayor

Feb 5, 2026

New York City is celebrating historic drops in gun violence, but another crisis is rapidly unfolding beneath the surface. As January 2026 closed, NYPD data revealed that antisemitic hate crimes more than doubled compared to the same month last year. While murders and shootings hit record lows, Jewish New Yorkers found themselves increasingly targeted in playgrounds, on subways, and near synagogues. The surge coincided with the first weeks of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration, raising alarm within a community already shaken by months of global anti-Jewish hostility.

The numbers are stark. According to the New York City Police Department, antisemitic incidents jumped 182 percent year-over-year, accounting for more than half of all hate crimes reported in January—despite Jews making up roughly ten percent of the city’s population. Swastikas, physical assaults, and targeted harassment have become distressingly common. Jewish leaders warn that political rhetoric matters, and that years of demonizing Israel and Zionism do not remain confined to policy debates—they spill into the streets, legitimizing hostility toward Jewish people themselves.

This surge carries prophetic weight. Scripture repeatedly warns that hatred of the Jewish people will intensify as the world moves further from God’s truth (Zechariah 12:3; Matthew 24:9). Antisemitism is not merely a social ill—it is a spiritual barometer. When societies normalize hostility toward God’s covenant people, they reveal a deeper rebellion against His purposes. New York’s troubling statistics are not just a civic failure; they are a reminder that the ancient animosity the Bible foretold is alive and accelerating in the last days.
