NYC Sees Antisemitism Surge

Aug 4, 2026

Anti-Jewish hate crimes surged dramatically in New York City during July, according to newly released NYPD statistics. Authorities recorded a 53.3% increase in antisemitic hate crimes compared to the same month last year, with Jewish victims accounting for nearly 70% of all confirmed hate crimes in the city despite Jews representing only a small percentage of New York's population. The figures include assaults, harassment, and acts of vandalism directed at Jewish individuals and institutions, prompting renewed concern from community leaders and elected officials over the growing wave of antisemitism.

The troubling numbers reflect a broader trend that has unfolded since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, with Jewish communities around the world reporting a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents. While overall crime in New York has declined in several major categories, anti-Jewish hate crimes continue to move in the opposite direction. Jewish leaders have called for stronger action to protect synagogues, schools, and neighborhoods, warning that the normalization of anti-Jewish rhetoric inevitably fuels hostility and violence.
