A Christian is being killed approximately every 86 minutes in Nigeria, according to a disturbing new report documenting the escalating violence against believers in Africa’s most populous nation. Equipping The Persecuted recorded at least 4,216 Christian deaths between January 1 and September 8, 2026—an average of nearly 17 Christians killed every day. The organization says the total is a documented minimum and may understate the true scale of the bloodshed. Much of the violence is concentrated in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where Christian farming communities have endured repeated village raids, murders, kidnappings, church burnings, intimidation, and displacement. The report identifies armed Fulani-linked militant networks—not Fulani people generally—as the principal named threat in several heavily affected areas and says those networks accounted for more recorded deaths in its incident tracking than Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province combined.
The crisis is about more than casualty numbers. Equipping The Persecuted estimates that more than five million Christians have been displaced and more than 600 Christian communities destroyed or emptied amid years of violence and insecurity. The report argues that describing every attack simply as a farmer-herder dispute or competition over land can obscure cases in which Christian identity, churches, clergy, and Christian communities are specifically targeted. Nigeria’s conflict is complex—Muslims are also murdered by jihadists and other armed groups, while disputes over land, ethnicity, grazing, organized crime, and weak governance contribute substantially to the violence. But separate research from the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa found that Christians suffered disproportionately in its multi-year dataset, while the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom describes Nigeria as facing a severe crisis involving religiously motivated extremism alongside economic, ethnic, governance, and criminal factors.
