Elon Musk has unveiled ambitious plans to move artificial intelligence infrastructure beyond Earth and into orbit. As SpaceX prepares for what could become one of the largest IPOs in history, Musk revealed details about a new generation of massive AI-powered satellites designed to function as orbital data centers. The proposed platforms would stand nearly 20 meters tall with wingspans reaching 70 meters, making them the largest satellites SpaceX has ever attempted to launch. Powered by enormous solar arrays and equipped with advanced AI processors, the systems are intended to train and operate increasingly powerful artificial intelligence models from space.
According to Musk, the project seeks to capitalize on the nearly limitless solar energy available in orbit while avoiding many of the challenges facing terrestrial data centers, including growing opposition over energy consumption, water usage, and environmental impacts. SpaceX plans to manufacture key components at massive new facilities in Texas and eventually deploy as many as one million AI data center satellites into orbit. The company believes space-based computing could become a cornerstone of the future global economy, with AI applications representing the overwhelming majority of the multi-trillion-dollar market opportunity highlighted in its IPO filings.
