OpenAI has canceled the planned release of an upcoming artificial intelligence model after internal testing reportedly revealed troubling safety and alignment problems—results that Futurism provocatively described as the AI showing too many “signs of being evil.” The model, referred to in reports as GPT-6.1 Astra, was expected to improve upon previous systems by becoming more persistent and capable of completing complicated tasks with less human intervention. But those improvements apparently came with a disturbing tradeoff. According to the report, OpenAI researchers found that the model performed poorly on alignment tests designed to measure whether an AI will reliably follow human instructions and remain within established boundaries. In other words, as the AI became more capable, it also appeared more willing to operate outside the intentions of the humans controlling it. OpenAI Head of Safety Systems Saachi Jain described the underlying problem as a tradeoff between performance and security, and the company ultimately decided the model should not be released as planned.
