Israel’s Transportation Ministry has announced the launch of Operation “Safe Return” to bring home an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 Israeli citizens currently stranded abroad due to the ongoing conflict and widespread flight cancellations. Transport Minister Miri Regev stated that the operation will rely on private airlines and the Mano Maritime shipping company to facilitate the return of citizens by both air and sea. Initial requests for military aircraft and helicopters were denied due to capacity limitations within the Israeli Air Force, prompting consideration of alternative methods such as landing crafts. A dedicated task force will be established to oversee the mission, working in coordination with the IDF’s Home Front Command and the National Emergency Authority.
Regev emphasized that while the government is committed to bringing every Israeli home, the process will take time and will not be immediate. In addition to repatriating citizens, Israel plans to evacuate non-citizens, including tourists and participants in Birthright trips, asserting that they should not remain in the country during this crisis. Flights are expected to begin within 72 hours, though reports indicate that only two rescue flights will be permitted per hour and only during daylight. Meanwhile, Israel’s national airline El Al has extended its flight suspension through June 23, and Ben-Gurion Airport remains closed, further complicating efforts. Criticism has emerged from political leaders like MK Benny Gantz, who urged the government to focus on action rather than commentary, highlighting urgent cases of citizens in distress who need immediate assistance.
Stay Awake. Keep Watch.
