Outcry Over Resort Plans at Mount Sinai

Sep 10, 2025

Egypt’s “Great Transfiguration Project” has stirred fierce opposition after announcing plans to build luxury resorts, shopping centers, and villas at Mount Sinai—the sacred site where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. The government claims the project will turn the area into a spiritual and tourist destination, blending mountain, medical, and environmental attractions. Mount Sinai is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, deeply revered by Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and home to the ancient Orthodox Monastery of St. Catherine at the base of Mount Horeb.

Religious leaders and local communities are raising alarm. Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens condemned the initiative, warning that the monastery’s property is being “seized and expropriated,” calling it an existential threat to Orthodoxy. Members of the Jebeleya tribe, long known as guardians of St. Catherine’s, say their eco-camps and homes have been destroyed with little or no compensation. They argue that the project risks erasing both the spiritual integrity of the holy mountain and the cultural traditions that have protected it for centuries.
