Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan escalated sharply this week after Pakistan launched a new round of airstrikes inside Afghan territory, killing at least 13 people according to Taliban authorities. The strikes targeted areas in the provinces of Khost, Kunar, and Paktika, with Taliban officials claiming that civilians, including 11 children, were among the dead. Pakistani officials acknowledged carrying out the operation but stated that the targets were militant hideouts and safe havens responsible for recent terrorist attacks inside Pakistan, claiming that 26 militants were killed in the assault.
The latest violence comes just months after Islamabad declared itself in an “open war” with Kabul following a surge in cross-border attacks. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban government of harboring militants who conduct operations against Pakistani security forces, an accusation the Taliban continues to reject. The renewed strikes follow a deadly attack on a Pakistani security checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that left six security personnel dead. Despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by China earlier this year, the fragile peace appears to be rapidly unraveling.
