Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan escalated dramatically this week after Pakistani ground operations and airstrikes reportedly killed at least 36 civilians and wounded more than 160 people in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces. Afghan officials said the strikes hit areas in Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces, with reports indicating that homes and civilian gatherings were caught in the attacks. Pakistan defended the operation, claiming it targeted militant hideouts responsible for a series of attacks inside Pakistan and stating that 29 militants were killed during the cross-border campaign.
The Taliban government strongly condemned the strikes, describing them as an act of aggression and warning that retaliation would come “in due time.” Afghan officials alleged that civilians, including children and elderly residents, were among the dead and that a second strike occurred after villagers gathered to rescue survivors. The growing hostility between the two Islamic neighbors adds yet another flashpoint to an already unstable region stretching from the Middle East through Central Asia. With Iran, Israel, Lebanon, and the Red Sea already dominating headlines, the Afghan-Pakistan border now appears increasingly vulnerable to broader regional instability.
