Pastor Faces Trial for Preaching Near Abortion Clinic

Mar 15, 2025

A retired pastor, Clive Johnston, is facing legal action for allegedly breaching the Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Act after holding an open-air Sunday service near Causeway Hospital in Northern Ireland. The law criminalizes any attempt to influence, impede access, or cause distress to individuals entering abortion clinics. Johnston, 76, was accused of violating the law by preaching the gospel in proximity to the hospital’s buffer zone on July 7, 2023.

The Christian Institute, which is providing legal support for Johnston, argues that his actions were peaceful and merely an exercise of religious freedom. The institute, known for its involvement in the landmark Ashers Baking Co. “Gay Cake Case”, claims that Johnston was asked to leave by the police and was charged after failing to do so immediately. They assert that his only goal was to share the love of God, not to harass or intimidate anyone seeking abortion services.

This case highlights the increasing suppression of Christian voices in public spaces. Jesus warned that in the last days, believers would face persecution for proclaiming truth (Matthew 10:22). Additionally, Isaiah 5:20 speaks of a time when good will be called evil and evil good, reflecting the growing hostility toward those standing for biblical morality. As society continues to silence those who speak against sin, this case serves as a sobering reminder that Christians must remain bold in their faith while preparing for the increasing opposition prophesied in Scripture.
