Pentagon Simulates Space Nukes

May 14, 2026

The United States Space Command has launched a new classified military wargame series designed to prepare for future conflicts in space, and the first scenario reportedly simulated a nuclear weapon detonating in orbit around Earth. According to Gen. Stephen Whiting, the exercise brought together more than 60 commercial companies along with allied nations including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom to examine how such a catastrophic event could impact satellites, communications, and military operations. Officials described the simulation as a “worst-case scenario,” warning that a nuclear detonation in low-Earth orbit could cripple portions of space infrastructure for up to a year.

The growing concern comes amid continued warnings that Russia has explored placing nuclear or anti-satellite weapons in orbit, a move that would violate the longstanding Outer Space Treaty. US officials believe that even a single detonation in space could disable thousands of satellites simultaneously, disrupting everything from military communications and missile defense systems to banking, GPS navigation, internet access, and civilian infrastructure across the globe. In recent years, the Pentagon has increasingly emphasized the importance of commercial satellite systems and private technology companies in modern warfare, particularly following the lessons learned from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
