Poll Shows US Support Shifting on Israel

Aug 21, 2025

A new Reuters poll shows a significant decline in U.S. public support for Israel, with a growing number of Americans now favoring Palestinian statehood. According to the survey, 58% of respondents back United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state, while 33% oppose it and 9% offered no opinion. The polling, conducted over six days and ending Monday, coincided with renewed discussions of a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The results also follow recent moves by Canada, Britain, and France to formally recognize a Palestinian state, amplifying international pressure on Israel.

The survey further revealed that 59% of Americans view Israel’s military response in Gaza as excessive, an increase from 53% in February 2024. Meanwhile, 65% support U.S. efforts to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, compared to 28% who oppose intervention. The poll highlights the widening gap in U.S. public opinion as the war continues nearly two years after Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, which killed 1,200 people and left dozens still held hostage in Gaza.
