Pope Leo is continuing to raise concerns about the direction of artificial intelligence, warning that humanity faces a defining choice regarding the technologies it is rapidly building. Drawing from the biblical account of Babel, he cautioned that society risks constructing a modern version of the ancient tower — not one built with bricks and mortar, but with algorithms, data systems, and technological ambition. He argued that Babel represented humanity’s attempt to elevate itself apart from God, a pursuit rooted in pride and self-sufficiency that ultimately led to confusion and division rather than unity. According to the Pope, the danger today is that technology could become a new language promising universal answers while gradually replacing deeper truths about human dignity and purpose.
The Pope also warned of a future where artificial intelligence and data collection create unprecedented systems of social control. Massive amounts of personal information, combined with predictive algorithms, could enable governments, corporations, or institutions to profile and influence behavior in ways people may scarcely recognize. He described a growing technocratic mindset that increasingly views human beings as systems to optimize rather than individuals created with inherent value. Particularly striking was his warning that some post-humanist philosophies envision a world where certain individuals could become “second-class” humans beneath technologically enhanced elites or systems of power.
