Al-Shammari even pointed back to Barack Obama's 2008 election as what he described as the "first fissure" in America's traditional political establishment—not because Obama is Muslim, which he is not, but because his background represented to the columnist a breaking of longstanding political barriers. Taken together, Al-Shammari argues these developments are not isolated victories but part of a trajectory that could eventually lead directly to the Oval Office.

None of those individual examples proves the existence of some coordinated Islamic takeover of American institutions, and American Muslims possess the same constitutional right to seek elected office as citizens of any other faith. What deserves attention is that a commentator operating within Qatar's state-controlled media environment is connecting these developments himself and presenting them to an Arabic-speaking audience as evidence of Islam's growing political influence inside America.
