Qatar Predicts Muslim US President

Aug 17, 2026

A columnist for Qatar's state-owned Al-Sharq newspaper is predicting that the election of America's first Muslim president may be "not far" away, pointing to the growing political success of Muslim Americans as evidence of a larger transformation underway inside the United States. Abd Al-Rahman Al-Shammari, who also works as a presenter for Qatar's state television, highlighted several political milestones—including Zohran Mamdani's rise in New York City and Abdul El-Sayed's Democratic Senate nomination in Michigan—as signs that Muslims are gaining access to positions of power once considered virtually unimaginable. Al-Shammari even pointed back to Barack Obama's 2008 election as what he described as the "first fissure" in America's traditional political establishment—not because Obama is Muslim, which he is not, but because his background represented to the columnist a breaking of longstanding political barriers. Taken together, Al-Shammari argues these developments are not isolated victories but part of a trajectory that could eventually lead directly to the Oval Office.

What makes the column particularly noteworthy is who is making the argument. This is not merely an American Muslim activist predicting greater political representation; it is commentary appearing in a state-owned Qatari newspaper from a writer who also works for Qatar's state television. Qatar has invested billions of dollars in American universities and hundreds of millions more through registered lobbying and public-relations operations, while its state-owned media network gives Doha an enormous international platform. The article also points to growing Muslim political and cultural influence at the local level, citing developments in New Jersey, Illinois, Texas, and Massachusetts. None of those individual examples proves the existence of some coordinated Islamic takeover of American institutions, and American Muslims possess the same constitutional right to seek elected office as citizens of any other faith. What deserves attention is that a commentator operating within Qatar's state-controlled media environment is connecting these developments himself and presenting them to an Arabic-speaking audience as evidence of Islam's growing political influence inside America.
