A newly released report is raising serious concerns about the growing influence of Qatar over American education, alleging that Qatar Foundation International (QFI) spent more than $65 million over the past 16 years funding programs that reached deep into K-12 schools, universities, teacher-training programs, and national educator networks across the United States. According to the report by the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP), the organization’s activities extended far beyond simply promoting Arabic language education. Researchers claim the funding helped shape curriculum development, social studies instruction, teacher training, and student activism connected to Middle East issues, often with little transparency to parents or the public.
The report alleges that QFI partnered with federally funded Middle East studies centers connected to major universities, including Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Texas at Austin, using those relationships to distribute educational materials and influence classrooms nationwide. One example cited involved school materials that reportedly omitted Israel from maps and replaced it with “Palestine,” drawing congressional scrutiny. ISGAP also claims teachers participating in QFI-supported professional development programs were required to submit lesson plans for review, giving the organization direct influence over classroom content. Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle expressed alarm, warning that foreign governments should never quietly shape what American children are taught.
