The Vatican has released a major theological document addressing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and transhumanist technologies. The report, issued by the International Theological Commission and titled Quo vadis, humanitas? (“Where are you going, humanity?”), explores how modern technological developments are reshaping the understanding of what it means to be human. The document warns that while technological innovation can bring medical and scientific advancements, it also carries the risk of redefining human identity by treating the body and mind as systems that can be optimized, modified, or even replaced.
The report specifically examines the growing influence of transhumanism—the idea that science and technology can eventually overcome human limitations such as aging, disease, and even death. According to the Vatican’s analysis, such visions often blur the boundary between human beings and machines while promoting a worldview in which humanity becomes something to be redesigned rather than a gift received. The document argues that technology increasingly functions not merely as a tool but as an environment that shapes how people think, communicate, and understand themselves. It also warns about the concentration of technological power, the erosion of critical thinking, and the potential manipulation of individuals through digital systems and artificial intelligence.
