A new book by technology journalist Karen Hao is pulling back the curtain on what she describes as the increasingly secretive and ideological world inside OpenAI. In her book Empire of AI: Inside the Reckless Race for Total Domination, Hao recounts her rare access to the company in 2019 following its major partnership with Microsoft. According to her account, what began as an organization promoting openness and beneficial artificial intelligence gradually evolved into an environment marked by heightened secrecy, tight internal controls, and growing anxiety surrounding the race to create artificial general intelligence, often called AGI. Employees reportedly became increasingly cautious about speaking openly while access to certain areas and projects became tightly restricted.
Perhaps the most striking claims involve descriptions of what some insiders allegedly viewed as a near-religious pursuit of creating a "machine god." Hao writes that symbolic rituals, intense ideological commitments, and extreme security concerns began surfacing as the company scaled its ambitions. The organization reportedly shifted from more targeted AI development toward a brute-force approach involving massive computational resources, gigantic data centers, and enormous data collection efforts designed to push AI systems toward increasingly advanced capabilities. Critics argue this path has accelerated privacy concerns, data scraping issues, and unprecedented demands on infrastructure while fueling a wider race throughout the technology industry.
