Excitement is once again building among those closely watching Temple-related developments in Israel after reports emerged that a completely red calf was recently born on a dairy farm in the Galilee region. The calf was discovered by livestock specialist Shai Givon, who performed the artificial insemination that resulted in the unusual birth. According to reports, the animal was born entirely red despite expectations that the dominant black genetics of the dairy cow would likely produce a darker-colored offspring. The birth has generated significant interest among researchers involved in studying the biblical requirements of the red heifer described in Numbers 19.
Givon is no stranger to the subject. Approximately fifteen years ago, a similar red calf was born within his herd but was later disqualified after developing black hairs on portions of its body. Since then, he has become actively involved with Israel's National Institute for Red Cow Research, a group dedicated to examining the scientific, agricultural, and halachic questions surrounding the possibility of producing a biblically qualified red heifer. Researchers are reportedly evaluating numerous issues, including genetics, identification methods, and ceremonial requirements connected to the ancient purification ritual.
