A new report from the International Society for Civil Rights and Rule of Law (Intersociety) alleges that 1,402 Christians were killed in Nigeria between January and early April 2026, with an additional 1,800 abducted during the same period. The group claims that persecution has intensified across multiple regions, particularly in states such as Benue, Kaduna, Plateau, and Borno. According to the report, violence spiked during key periods, including Holy Week and Easter, when dozens of Christians were reportedly killed in targeted attacks.
Intersociety also alleges that many of those abducted are subjected to brutal conditions, with a significant number never returning alive due to torture, starvation, or untreated injuries. The group claims that approximately one in ten abducted Christians dies in captivity. Despite these allegations, the Nigerian government has continued to deny that Christians are being systematically targeted. The report further accuses elements within the system of failing to adequately respond, while extremist groups openly declare their intention to expand their influence and impose broader religious control.
The situation has displaced thousands of Christians, forcing many into refugee camps within their own country. This is another sobering reminder that persecution is not a distant or historical reality, but a present and growing crisis. Scripture speaks of a time when believers would face increasing hostility and violence for their faith. What is unfolding in Nigeria reflects a pattern that continues to spread, as the cost of following Christ rises in regions where darkness is tightening its grip.
