A new study conducted by a coalition of religious universities has found that many of today’s most popular artificial intelligence systems exhibit measurable religious bias when responding to questions about faith and conversion. Researchers from Brigham Young University, Baylor University, the University of Notre Dame, and Yeshiva University evaluated 14 leading AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini. Using what they called the “AllFaith Benchmark,” researchers tested how AI systems interacted with a variety of religious perspectives and found that several models appeared more favorable toward Catholicism while displaying bias against other religious traditions.
The findings were presented at the Athens Summit on AI Ethics in Greece, where religious leaders, academics, and technology experts gathered to discuss the growing influence of artificial intelligence on society. Elder Gerrit W. Gong of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints warned that AI has the potential to amplify religious bias on a massive scale, shaping perceptions of faith among millions of users. Researchers expressed concern that as AI increasingly becomes a source of information and guidance, hidden biases within these systems could influence how people understand religion, morality, and spiritual truth.
