Rewinding Aging In The Lab

May 28, 2026

Israeli and American researchers say they have successfully reversed key signs of aging in the livers of elderly mice, marking what some scientists are calling a major breakthrough in longevity research. The peer-reviewed study, published in Nature Communications, focused on increasing levels of a protein known as SIRT6, often referred to as a “longevity protein.” Researchers from Bar-Ilan University, alongside scientists from the U.S. National Institute on Aging and Tel Aviv University, found that boosting SIRT6 levels appeared to restore aging liver tissue to a significantly younger biological state. Scientists described the process as effectively “rewinding” age-related cellular decline.

According to the research team, the protein helped reorganize damaged DNA structures inside aging cells and reduced the inflammation commonly associated with growing older. Older mice, equivalent in age to humans in their seventies or eighties, reportedly experienced reversal of certain biological markers tied to aging after SIRT6 levels were elevated. Researchers say the findings could eventually lead to therapies designed not merely to treat diseases individually, but to slow or reverse aging itself. Scientists involved in the project openly discussed hopes of extending healthy human lifespan and preserving tissue function far longer than currently possible.
