After years of delays, Ring’s much-anticipated flying indoor security drone—the Always Home Cam—may finally be preparing for launch. Originally unveiled in 2020 with plans for a 2021 release, the device never made it to market. However, recent reports indicate that Ring founder and CEO Jamie Siminoff, who has been personally testing the drone in his office, could soon release it in limited quantities. The compact drone, designed to fly preset paths through a home, features obstacle avoidance and returns to a charging dock after each flight. Marketed as a solution for privacy-conscious homeowners, the drone offers remote interior surveillance through the Ring app, eliminating the need for multiple plug-in cameras throughout the home.
While the Always Home Cam is being promoted as a cost-effective innovation at $249.99, critics are raising alarms over its implications. Though the device lacks a microphone, privacy advocates remain skeptical about the presence of an autonomous flying camera in domestic spaces—especially one produced by Amazon, a company frequently scrutinized for its data practices. Groups like Big Brother Watch argue that the product normalizes invasive surveillance under the guise of convenience. Despite such concerns, Ring maintains that the drone aligns with their principles of privacy and security, offering flexibility without the need for multiple static cameras. Still, the prospect of in-home surveillance drones signals a growing tension between technological convenience and the preservation of personal privacy.
