Rising Accusations: Genocide Claims Surge

Aug 6, 2025

The mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, lashed out at Israel with accusations of genocide following criticism over antisemitic vandalism in the Greek capital. After Israeli Ambassador Noam Katz condemned the city’s failure to address a recent surge in hate crimes—including a disturbing incident where extremists defaced an Israeli restaurant with threats and anti-IDF graffiti—Doukas defended his city's record and turned the spotlight on Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Rejecting any "lessons in democracy" from Israel, Doukas claimed Athens supports freedom of expression and alleged that Israel’s conduct in Gaza, involving civilian deaths and humanitarian suffering, undermines its credibility to lecture others on democratic values.

Similarly, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has intensified his rhetoric against Israel, labeling its military campaign in Gaza as "genocide" and accusing it of using famine and suffering as tools of war. Speaking at a public event, al-Sisi declared that Israel's actions have gone beyond legitimate military objectives and are now aimed at erasing the Palestinian issue altogether. He also criticized the international community’s silence, suggesting that the crisis in Gaza has been reduced to political leverage. His remarks mark a notable shift in Egypt’s tone and reflect growing domestic pressure over Cairo’s position on the war.
