Iran has reportedly turned to Russia for a new generation of advanced attack drones to use in its ongoing war against Israel and the United States. According to a Financial Times report cited by Israel National News, Tehran has requested Russian-made Gran drones—highly upgraded descendants of Iran’s own Shahed family of unmanned aircraft. Russia began domestically producing Iranian-designed Shaheds in 2023, but years of combat experience in Ukraine have allowed Moscow to continuously modify the platform. The latest Gran-4 and Gran-5 variants have recently been used against Ukrainian urban targets and are presenting new challenges for air-defense systems. In a remarkable reversal, Iran supplied Russia with the foundation for its drone warfare program; now Iran reportedly wants Russia to send back a far more sophisticated version of the weapon it helped Moscow develop.
The improvements go well beyond simple modifications. Newer Russian Gran drones reportedly incorporate thermal-imaging capabilities, artificial-intelligence-based target acquisition, redesigned airframes, increased speed, and Russian antennas engineered to resist navigation jamming. Russia’s centralized production system has allowed engineers to rapidly absorb lessons from the Ukrainian battlefield, modify the aircraft, and deploy improved versions into combat. That battlefield feedback loop is particularly significant for Israel. Technologies refined against Ukrainian air defenses could potentially be transferred to Iran and tested against Israeli and American defenses, meaning the Russia-Iran relationship is becoming more than a traditional arms partnership. It is increasingly a technological exchange in which Persia supplies weapons and battlefield relationships to Russia, Russia improves those weapons through sustained warfare, and the upgraded systems can potentially flow back to Persia.
