Russia Pushes Mandatory Biometric Internet ID

Nov 3, 2025

Russia is moving to make its national biometric ID system the gatekeeper of the country’s internet. Lawmakers are advancing a proposal that would require citizens to authenticate through the government’s Unified Biometrics System (UBS) and e-government portal “Gosuslugi” before accessing any content deemed “adult” or “potentially harmful.” Officials claim the measure is designed to protect minors from pornography, violence, and “antisocial propaganda,” but digital rights experts warn it represents another major step toward full state surveillance. The initiative would effectively eliminate online anonymity, allowing the Kremlin to track and record the browsing habits of every verified user in real time.

This new push fits within Moscow’s long-term strategy of “digital sovereignty” — a vision where all online activity is filtered through state-controlled systems. Since 2012, Russia’s internet regulations have steadily expanded under the guise of protecting children and national security, but each new law has further eroded personal privacy. If passed, citizens will have to verify their identities for every restricted website or platform, building a permanent log of digital behavior. In prophetic terms, it mirrors the growing global trend toward centralized digital control — a system where buying, selling, and even viewing content requires state-sanctioned identity. It is one more step toward the infrastructure that Revelation describes as a world under total surveillance and control.
