Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly declared Moscow's solidarity with Iran during a face-to-face meeting Tuesday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Putin told Pezeshkian that Russia stands with the Iranian people as they defend their interests and emphasized what he described as the special character of the relationship between Moscow and Tehran. The Russian leader also asked Pezeshkian to convey his greetings to Iran's Supreme Leader and pointed to the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed between the two countries as evidence that Russian-Iranian relations have entered a new stage. The meeting came at an especially volatile moment, just days after renewed fighting between Iran and the United States shattered a month-long lull in their conflict.
