A group associated with The Satanic Temple has released a disturbing music video depicting what it calls a “Satanic abortion ritual” inside a Hobby Lobby bathroom, deliberately choosing a business widely known for its Christian ownership and values. The video was released by Satanic Planet, a band that includes Satanic Temple co-founder Lucien Greaves, and features a woman entering the store while Christian merchandise and references to Jesus are repeatedly shown. Once inside the restroom, she performs The Satanic Temple's abortion ritual, gazing into a mirror, reciting the group's tenets concerning bodily autonomy, and taking an abortion pill. The ritual concludes with an affirmation centered on her body, blood, and will. The video then depicts Christian merchandise—including crosses, Scripture, and an image declaring “Jesus loves me”—engulfed in flames. LifeSiteNews said Hobby Lobby had not responded to its request for comment at the time the story was published.
This was not simply a provocative music video using satanic imagery for shock value. The Satanic Temple officially promotes what it calls a “Religious Abortion Ritual,” arguing that abortion is connected to its religious beliefs concerning bodily autonomy. The organization has challenged abortion restrictions in court on religious-liberty grounds and operates abortion services named provocatively after Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's mother—a reference to Alito's role in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Greaves said alongside the new video that the organization has opened three abortion clinics, is working toward a fourth, and intends to pursue legal action aimed at allowing abortion drugs to be shipped into states despite restrictions. The Satanic Temple describes itself as non-theistic and does not claim belief in a literal devil, but there is no ambiguity about the imagery it has chosen: Satan becomes the symbol, abortion becomes the ritual, and Christianity becomes the object of deliberate mockery.
