Saudi Arabia has reportedly turned to Israel for intelligence assistance as Iran-backed Houthi forces intensify attacks against the kingdom and tighten their grip around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. According to The Jerusalem Post, citing a Walla report and regional diplomatic sources, Israeli and Saudi officials held talks mediated by U.S. Central Command aimed at helping Riyadh defend against the growing Houthi threat. The request comes after Houthi forces attacked Saudi oil pipelines and pumping facilities, forcing a partial shutdown along a major pipeline, while another attack struck civilians at a mosque and nearby buildings close to the Yemen-Saudi border. At the same time, Houthi forces seized strategically positioned Red Sea islands and reportedly prevented Saudi vessels from passing through Bab al-Mandab, creating what sources described as an economic and diplomatic blockade.
The reported cooperation is particularly significant because Israel and Saudi Arabia still do not have formal diplomatic relations. Yet the growing Iranian threat is increasingly pushing the two countries toward practical security cooperation. Israel has developed extensive intelligence and operational experience tracking Iranian forces and maritime activity, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, and Saudi Arabia reportedly wants access to that expertise to better understand Houthi deployments and anticipate future attacks. Riyadh has also asked Britain for assistance in defending its oil infrastructure and pushing Houthi forces away from Bab al-Mandab. Behind these developments is a larger regional fear: Iran and its proxies are demonstrating an ability to pressure critical waterways, energy infrastructure, and neighboring governments simultaneously. Whatever political disagreements remain between Jerusalem and Riyadh, the Iranian threat is giving both countries a powerful reason to cooperate.
