President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom” operation in the Strait of Hormuz has been paused after Saudi Arabia refused to allow U.S. military aircraft to use critical Saudi airspace and bases for the mission. According to NBC News, the operation was designed to escort stranded commercial ships through the increasingly dangerous waterway amid escalating tensions with Iran. However, two U.S. officials stated that Gulf allies were caught off guard by Trump’s announcement, and Saudi leadership quickly pushed back against the plan, forcing the administration to reconsider its approach. Without access to Saudi airspace, the U.S. military’s ability to provide aerial protection for ships in the region became severely limited.

The report highlights just how fragile and complex the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East has become. Saudi Arabia had previously allowed U.S. aircraft to operate from Prince Sultan Airbase during Operation Epic Fury against Iran, but this latest refusal signals growing caution among Gulf states as fears of a broader regional war intensify. While Saudi officials reportedly continue to support diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and negotiations between the United States and Iran, the incident exposed underlying tensions between Washington and its regional allies. Even Oman, according to reports, was only contacted after the operation had already been publicly announced.
