Science Confirms Life’s Glow, Scripture Affirms

Oct 2, 2025

Scientists at the University of Calgary recently confirmed something remarkable: all living creatures emit a faint glow—an ultraweak photon emission (UPE)—that is tied to life itself and extinguishes when death occurs. This glow, invisible to the human eye, is produced by reactive oxygen species within the body’s metabolism. The findings are fascinating: live mice emitted this glow strongly, but once life left them, the light faded. Even plants revealed similar patterns, with their glow shifting in response to stress, injury, or chemical exposure. In other words, life on earth literally shines with a hidden light—one that vanishes the moment breath departs.

From a biblical perspective, this is no surprise. Scripture has long described life as light and death as its extinguishing. Job declared, “The light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of his fire does not shine” (Job 18:5). John affirmed that, “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men” (John 1:4). The physical glow that vanishes at death echoes the spiritual truth that apart from Christ, the light of man is temporary and fragile. Yet in Jesus, the true Light of the world (John 8:12), there is a glow that no grave can extinguish. As science uncovers the faint spark woven into creation, prophecy reminds us of the eternal Light promised to believers—a light that will never fade when He calls us to resurrection life. The glow of mortality is fleeting, but the Light of Christ shines forever.
