Scientists Mull Plan to Steer Hurricanes

Jun 29, 2026

A controversial new study published in PLOS Water is reigniting debate over humanity’s growing desire to control the natural world. Researchers propose combining traditional cloud-seeding techniques with artificial intelligence, real-time atmospheric data, and precision weather modeling to influence the paths of hurricanes and other extreme weather events. According to the study, carefully timed interventions could potentially alter the course of major storms, lessen rainfall from atmospheric rivers, or even reduce the severity of winter weather events. Supporters argue that such technology could protect vulnerable populations and reduce the devastating economic costs associated with natural disasters.

The study specifically suggests that enhanced cloud-seeding operations might have shifted the path of Superstorm Sandy away from New York City, moderated the deadly Texas freeze of 2021, and reduced flooding from a 2022 atmospheric river in California. Yet many atmospheric scientists remain highly skeptical. Critics point out that there is currently no scientific evidence that existing cloud-seeding technologies can influence massive weather systems such as hurricanes, which are driven by forces far larger than localized interventions. Nevertheless, the willingness to explore such ideas reveals an increasing confidence that humanity can engineer and manipulate the very systems of creation itself.
