The Islamic Center of Quad Cities (ICQC) in Texas is undergoing a rapid and ambitious expansion, raising concerns about the growing influence of Sharia law in the state. Once operating out of a small strip mall, ICQC now has plans for a 24,000-square-foot mosque, separate prayer halls for men and women, and additional facilities aimed at establishing a strong Islamic presence in the region. This expansion is part of a larger movement occurring across Texas, particularly in the Dallas-Houston-Austin corridor, where Islamic centers are increasing in number and size.
Critics argue that this expansion is not just about religious freedom, but about reshaping the cultural and legal landscape of Texas. The growing influence of Islamic organizations is often accompanied by demands for accommodations based on Sharia law, including gender segregation and legal exceptions. Proponents, however, insist that these expansions are simply meant to serve the Muslim community’s needs and do not represent a broader ideological push.
