Scientists have identified six previously unknown structures lurking nearly 1,800 miles beneath Earth's surface, close to the boundary separating the rocky mantle from the planet's liquid outer core. Because humans cannot directly explore such depths, researchers essentially use earthquakes to peer inside the planet, analyzing how seismic waves travel through different materials. A team led by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences trained a deep-learning system to search decades of seismic data for faint signals known as PKP precursors. After examining millions of recordings from nearly 5,000 earthquakes occurring between 1990 and 2024, the system identified 174,929 high-quality signals—more than ten times the amount gathered by previous studies combined. That enormous dataset allowed researchers to construct one of the clearest pictures yet of the mysterious region near Earth's core.
What emerged surprised researchers. The analysis revealed six previously undocumented zones containing what scientists call “deep-seated scatterers”—unusual variations in material that alter the paths of seismic waves traveling through the planet. Even more intriguing, structures previously believed to exist as isolated patches may actually connect into enormous belts extending across the core-mantle boundary. Scientists do not yet know precisely what all of these formations are or how they originated. One possibility is that some consist of ancient material carried deep into the planet through subduction, where pieces of Earth's crust slowly descend into the mantle. Other structures near this boundary may preserve chemical remnants dating back billions of years to Earth's earliest formation. Far beneath the familiar continents and oceans is an enormous hidden landscape that humanity is only beginning to map.
