Scientists studying the Sun have uncovered evidence that our nearest star may be undergoing a significant long-term change beneath its surface. Using nearly four decades of data collected by the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON), researchers discovered that magnetic activity associated with the Sun’s 11-year solar cycles is becoming increasingly compressed into a thin layer just below the solar surface. The findings, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, suggest that the Sun’s internal structure is behaving differently than it has in previous decades.
Traditionally, scientists have tracked solar activity through visible indicators such as sunspots. However, researchers used a technique known as helioseismology, which measures sound waves moving through the Sun’s interior, to gain a deeper understanding of what is happening beneath the surface. Their analysis revealed that solar cycles 22 through 25 display a progressive shift, with magnetic activity becoming more concentrated near the outer layers of the Sun. Researchers say this trend cannot be explained simply by weaker magnetic fields and may point to a broader structural reorganization occurring deep within the star.
