South Africa is dramatically accelerating its push toward a fully digitized national identity system, with the Department of Home Affairs requesting more than $828 million to expand Smart IDs, biometric voter registration, digital visas, and a new national digital ID platform. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber told parliament that the government plans to roll out digital identity services to hundreds of bank branches nationwide while also introducing doorstep delivery for IDs and passports. The initiative is part of South Africa’s broader “Home Affairs @ Home” digital transformation strategy aimed at placing government identity services directly “in the palm” of citizens’ hands.
The country is also rapidly expanding its biometric infrastructure. Officials announced that a nationwide biometric voter registration campaign will begin May 27 ahead of upcoming elections, while digital visa systems already piloted with countries such as China, India, Mexico, and Indonesia are expected to grow significantly in the coming months. South Africa’s MyMzansi DPI Roadmap is designed to streamline public services through interconnected digital systems, creating a centralized framework for identity verification, travel authorization, and citizen access to government programs. Supporters claim the technology will improve convenience and security, but critics worldwide continue raising concerns about privacy, centralized tracking, and the growing power of governments to monitor citizens through digital systems.
