South Africa is advancing toward a centralized digital identity system through its new MyMzansi Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) plan, which aims to unify access to government services under one platform. Communications Minister Solly Malatsi announced that the MyMzansi mobile app will serve as the foundation for this digital transformation, integrating three major components — a single digital ID, a data exchange platform, and a digital payments system. Through the app, citizens will be able to verify their identities using facial biometrics and access public services without visiting government offices. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by February next year, establishing the infrastructure needed to streamline service delivery and improve social protection programs.
The second phase, running from 2027 to 2030, will expand digitalization across key sectors such as education, healthcare, and business. President Cyril Ramaphosa has tied the initiative to South Africa’s broader digital transformation agenda, which he says will attract greater investment and modernize governance. Having previously championed digital public infrastructure during its G20 presidency, South Africa is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s digital revolution. However, experts warn that as digital systems evolve, the government must strengthen cybersecurity to counter rising threats — including deepfakes and fraud — that could exploit the very technologies meant to protect citizens.
