Sri Lanka Launches Digital ID System

Mar 30, 2026

Sri Lanka is moving forward with a phased rollout of a national digital identity system, known as SL-UDI, beginning with core enrollment, identity verification, and secure credential issuance. The initiative will eventually require a nationwide re-registration of all citizens, creating a unified identity framework within the next two years. This new system will incorporate biometric data and encrypted credentials, enabling individuals to access banking, government services, and documentation through a single, centralized digital identity.

Officials are framing the rollout as a step toward efficiency and modernization, allowing citizens to verify their identity remotely and streamline everyday transactions. During the transition, both physical and digital IDs will operate in parallel to ensure continuity. However, once fully implemented, the system will centralize identity verification across multiple sectors, linking personal data, financial access, and government interaction into a single digital infrastructure. What is being built is not just convenience—but dependency on a unified identity system.
